[Why. This isn't the first time he's been asked, but he stopped asking himself that question a long time ago. There had been a number of answers given, of course - they were God's "chosen people". Their trials would lead to divinity and safety. The outside world was toxic and decaying and they were being kept safe and strong underground.

[Then there was the real answer - the more practical answer, anyway. That Royce needed an army to carry out his schemes. That the numbers themselves may as well have been running that decaying world with all of the influence R01 had over it.

[But neither of those answers will satisfy what Archie is trying to ask. Why? Because they were numbers and they were meaningless. Because no God cared for them, real or false. Because Royce Montgomery was a bored child with an army of toys to play with at his leisure.

[There was no reason. There is no reason, for those that D33 has left behind. Pure, unadulterated, human cruelty is the only real answer. But "just because" hardly seems worth saying.]
